HAVING won the Le Quesne Trophy two years in succession, Guernsey’s men bowlers lost the inter-insular clash, by agonising four shots at Grainville, Jersey.

But in one of the most enthralling inter-insulars played at the Indoor Bowls Centre in recent times, the Sarnian women brought back their trophy after a 99-86 win.

‘All the way through it was nip and tuck,’ said JIBA president Ty Thomas.

‘There were 48 players on that green and everyone was out to do their best. Bowls isn’t the quiet-old-man-smoking-a-pipe stuff most people think it is: it’s too intense for that.’

In terms of matches won, Jersey ultimately had the edge, 7-5, but not before Saturday’s over-60s’ and Sunday’s triples’ and men’s team match went to the wire.
