‘Keep hold of vital services’

Wednesday 14th April 2010, 1:00PM BST.

Ron Le Cras WSVITAL services should be kept under the control of the States, according to union Unite’s regional officer.

Ron Le Cras (pictured) responded yesterday after Public Services announced it planned to ask deputies for direction on whether to pursue the commercialisation of trading entities including the airport, harbours, Guernsey Water and sewage and solid waste management.

Mr Le Cras said workers would be concerned by the prospect and criticised the department for not discussing it with the unions.

‘So far they have not even mentioned it to the unions or the employer representatives to say that this was what they are thinking about and I would have thought that they could have done,’ he said.

‘Obviously, we have concerns over job security and public sector worker benefits, bearing in mind these people are not well paid. But we also have concerns because these services are of course vitally important and it’s important we maintain them.’
