Friday 16 April
Friday 16th April 2010, 10:00PM BST.
One of the problems with campaigning in such an urban environment as Clerkenwell is that it’s very difficult to know during the day who’s a resident and who is merely working there.
In fact I could safely say that 95% of the people I might stop in the street would be office workers who leave at six or seven every evening to travel back to Clapham, Battersea, Wimbledon or some other part of South London.
This means that the only effective time we get for campaigning is in the evenings (and no one wants us knocking on their doors after 8pm) and the weekends, of which there are only three left and even then people can’t be guaranteed to be in. We are, in short, running out of time.
Therefore I’ve decided that the only way I can guarantee to reach people is to lurk outside Farringdon tube station from 6am each morning waiting for residents to catch trains to work. The irony of the fact that I have never bought a Big Issue, also bandied around outside the station, is not lost on me.
In the evening I took a much needed break from campaigning.
Don’t get too jealous, I have a stack of invoices to catch up on for work… I’m lucky to work with an excellent team across our offices without whose considerable skills I certainly couldn’t allocate so much time to this campaign.
Sadly there are some things that only I can do, and these are usually the most boring of administrative tasks.
