Sunday 18 April

Sunday 18th April 2010, 10:00PM BST.

The Sunday papers are full of the news of a huge surge in support for the Liberal Democrats.

Some even talk about Nick Clegg being the next Prime Minister!

This seems crazy if purely on the basis of the televised debate. When out canvassing in the street most people said he did well in the debate but don’t seem to know what any of his policies are.

Perhaps this a worrying effect of our Big Brother style celebrity culture, or just that people really haven’t made up their mind.

Either way it is bad news for the Channel Islands as the Liberal Democrats have them in their sights as part of the war on tax avoidance schemes.

The ways parliamentary constituencies are worked out benefits Labour and means the Liberal Democrats lose out, which is why they are so keen on proportional representation.

This would pretty much mean a hung parliament though, which I don’t think anybody wants.

The other option for a hung parliament is that Northern Irish politicians could come into play again as they did during the latter years of John Major’s administration.

But the political landscape has changed quite a lot since the Good Friday agreement so that more moderate parties on either side of the spectrum would make up the difference.
