Deputy wants Longue Hougue for Freds in sheds
Monday 19th April 2010, 2:29PM BST.

SOME ‘Fred in a shed’ firms are in danger of going out of business because of a lack of industrial land for them to operate from, according to one States member.
Speaking on the BBC Guernsey phone-in yesterday, Deputy Graham Guille (pictured) said light industry could not wait any longer for new premises.
‘It has to be done now.’
Four potential sites for small industrial businesses were identified in a report from an independent planning inspector that will go to the States this month.
Deputy Guille said the plans did not go far enough and wants Longue Hougue to be considered for industrial use.

I’m not sure where this ‘Fred in the Shed’ phrase came from but it’s unfortunate terminology. Mechanics, welders and many of the light industrial users are people who have trained for the minimum of four years to earn their stripes.
They are not charity cases, old duffers, or a nuisance. They are often professionals, risk takers that deserve to be taken more seriously than they have been for many a year.
And to be perfectly frank, what is Deputy Guille actually doing about it. He has been in government long enough to effect a strategy for these types of businesses.

I agree Neil – the ‘Fred in a Shed’ term makes me think of Arthur Daley and Del Boy. Also, what if you’re a woman?!
