A BEDROOM in a St Martin’s house has been badly damaged by fire.

The Fire and Rescue Service believe it was started by a pair of hair straighteners that were left on a bed.

Firefighters were called to 41, Sausmarez Mill, at 3.23 on Saturday afternoon.

A woman and her young child were in the house at the time but nobody was hurt.

Neighbour Karina Le Lacheur said: ‘She was downstairs with the little one.

‘Someone knocked at the door and said they could see smoke coming out the bedroom window so she grabbed the little one and ran.’
