End could be in sight for stranded travellers

Tuesday 20th April 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Simon McPhailLIGHT at the end of the tunnel for hundreds of stranded islanders receded this morning with reports of a new ash cloud.

There had been a dramatic reduction in the amount of ash being thrown up by Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano. The Met Office confirmed yesterday that the eruption had virtually ceased, with only small amounts of ash up to 6,000ft and none above 35,000.

However, this morning there was reported new activity.

Deputy airport director Simon McPhail (pictured) said the airport was acting on updates from air traffic control company Nats, which will decide when airspace can be reopened.

‘At the moment there is no clear indication whether or not we will be flying into the UK later on today.’
