Church bill goes through the roof

Thursday 22nd April 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Castel ChurchWORK on the Castel Church roof cost more than originally thought because the slates that had to come off had been mortared in place with lime, parishioners were told last night.

At the ecclesiastical parish meeting, ratepayers asked why there had been an overspend of £12,760 on the project.

A letter from architect Chris Workman, who was unable to attend the meeting, was circulated.

He wrote that the contractor had started reroofing the vestry in July last year.

Soon afterwards, the contractor had discovered that the slates were fixed to stone with lime mortar, he said.
