Merrien smashes marathon record

Monday 26th April 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Lee MerrienLEE MERRIEN (pictured) made a fantastic marathon debut in London yesterday, finishing fourth Briton and 12th overall in a new island record.

The Guernseyman’s time of 2hr 16min. 48sec. was more than seven minutes faster than the island record held by Peter Bourgaize for 25 years.

Merrien’s time beat the two hours 18min. qualifying standard set for this summer’s European Championships in Barcelona, but could not quite overhaul fellow Brion Ben Moreau in a tight race to the finish.

Merrien went through halfway in 67min. 50sec., which meant he only marginally slowed over the second tougher half of the course.

Andy Priaulx clocked 3hr, 39min. 31sec. for 8,064th position.
