GUERNSEY teachers showed their support for their Jersey counterparts at a march in St Helier on Saturday to protest against a public sector pay freeze.

A joint delegation of members from the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers and the National Union of Teachers flew to the island to take part in the march and rally that was also against the possibility of cuts in jobs and services.

Several hundred marched from Howard Davis Park to the Jersey Opera House ahead of a ballot on strike action on Monday.

NASUWT Guernsey secretary Caroline Bowker said it was important for teachers to show support for their colleagues.

‘It’s trying to show how concerned we are about the situation.’

Plenty of the rest of us have had to agree pay freezes this past year or so. Why should public sector workers be any different?

I suppose the customers of my employer have a choice where to take their business whereas we the public have little choice but to shell out our hard earned to fund these ‘public services’ – Get Real.

All state run operations become bloated after a period of time so a some years of budget cuts and freezes serve to focus minds.

If they demand pay rises, fire the lotta them and get some more from the UK, isn’t this what we do every 5 years anyway! I haven’t had a pay rise this year, and I doubt I’ll have one next year.
