ATHLETICS completed their rebirth with a solitary, somewhat lucky single goal triumph at the Corbet Field to win the Stranger Cup Final for the fourth time in their divided history.

But it was reward for a season’s endeavour on and off the field for the new Tics, not their performance in the final at the Corbet Field.

Whether it was the weather or the fact that a largely inexperienced side were playing in front of a sizeable audience for the first time, but Steve Ogier’s side did not play at all well.

You could not help but feel for the losing management team of Clive Bateman and Colin Renouf, who prepared their side well and on chances should have won.

The winning goal came just five minutes from the end of normal time and in a dire match played on a hard and bumpy pitch, there was no way back for Sylvans after Craig Farnham struck with a clinical shot between keeper Ashley Williams’ legs.
