People sing hymns outside to bid farewell to George

Thursday 29th April 2010, 2:29PM BST.

GUERNSEY legend George Torode received his final round of applause yesterday as hundreds of islanders paid their last respects.

An estimated 500 people turned out for the author’s funeral at Cobo Mission Hall and those who could not get into the hall stood outside for the duration of the service.

Speakers were put up outside for everyone to hear what Pastor Stephen Henry had to say about a man who was so well-known in the island.

‘We have come here today to remember a husband, dad, a granddad, son, brother and friend who blessed and encouraged so many,’ said Pastor Henry.

    A great send-off for a great Christian guy. If I hadn`t been so geographically challenged, I would have gone to the service as well.

    Yes Slep;
    I believe many would liked to have paid our last respects to a man.
    A man who made us all smile, to hear about our Island, and above all a man who didn’t need to have, or use bad language
    A man who taught us the way we should all behave-
    So long George: You were indeed a ‘True and faithful servant’

    We feel exactly the same slep/Eric: wish we could have been there. Fond memories of a very cool dude with his heart and soul in exactly the right place!
