GUERNSEY’S airport firefighter dispute has been settled.

Agreement has been reached on a package which includes a 7.8% increase in pensionable pay for the highest-grade firefighters, a no-strike clause, extra work, guaranteed cover and an undisclosed form of standby payment to ensure cover when illness hits.

Disagreement over pay and conditions led last year to the airport closing, the fall-out of which included members of the Public Sector Remuneration Committee resigning. It has taken just short of a year since then for the new PSRC, under the chairmanship of Deputy Allister Langlois, and the firefighters to reach agreement.

Deputy Langlois announced details of the deal in a surprise statement to the States at the beginning of yesterday’s afternoon session. Members applauded him.

In homage to Private Eye we can now bring you those airport firefighters pay negotiations in full…..

PSRC CHAIRMAN DEPUTY ALASTAIR LANGLOIS (a.k.a. MR ROLLOVER) “Er, welcome gentlemen, how much do you want?”

UNITE REPRESENTATIVE RON LE CRAS (a.k.a. RED RON) “Just give us one of those blank Guernsey taxpayer cheques and we’ll fill in the details.”

MR ROLLOVER: “Er, that’s very kind of you but how do we know you know your men won’t, er, go on strike again?”

RED RON: “Just hand us that cheque and you’ll be fine for the next five years.”

MR ROLLOVER: “Er, but if we do that everyone else will want an open cheque too.”

RED RON: “Just change the brothers’ job descriptions and you’ll have nothing further to worry about.”

MR ROLLOVER: “Er, that seems to be a very workable way forward. Thank you very much gentlemen for your understanding and co-operation.”

RED RON: “Oh, and mum’s the word on the standby arrangements.”

    MR ROLLOVER: “It’s a pleasure.”

(The two men shake on it before going off to sign the historic deal to ensure peace in our time in Guernsey’s public pay sector)

    Martino,
You appear a little disgruntled with the process and outcome of the Firefighters dispute!
Would you like to expand as to why?
Now that the facts on the history of their dispute have been published,I think what has been achieved by these men under what must have been very frustating times, should be applauded.
The recent drivel spouted by ex-PSRC members and general public alike is enough evidence to me that these individuals just do not listen to reason and will not accept when they are wrong.
Please ex-PSRC and your diminishing herd of followers bow out gracefully and embrace the facts.
    The Boys did good.

Your assessment of the agreement is so true.

It’s so easy to resolve a conflict if you pay enough, even disguising some of the true cost as standby payments, extra work with extra payment?

What about the extra cost involved in the simple, but so important words, pensionable pay?

Other States employees clearly can’t wait for the time when they meet Mr Rollover, the philanthropist. (with the money of others, of course)

    Thanks for that Stephen
And to Katie, yes, I totally concur with your final line.
The boys did, indeed, do good!
