HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES used £2.5m-worth of ‘kit cash’ to balance its books last year that should have been used to buy equipment.

The revelation came as minister Hunter Adam yesterday attempted to defend his department against claims made by Chief Minister Lyndon Trott that HSSD could not be trusted to manage the budget allocated it by the States.

After being granted permission by the Bailiff to respond, Deputy Adam dismissed the accusation by Deputy Trott that the department had overspent its budget by £13m.

And in hitting back, Deputy Adam challenged the chief minister to back him or sack him if the board ‘cannot be trusted’.
