WE’RE on our way to Croatia.

Amid fantastic and emotional scenes as dusk fell over the Track on Saturday night, Guernsey were crowned National League System Cup champions, 5-2 winners over the plucky Liverpool Premier County League.

The Track may be no Anfield or Goodison Park but as Tony Vance’s side lifted the trophy and won, arguably, the biggest match the island has ever played, the old Cycling Grounds was a very special place to be.

Mark Le Tissier, the GFA chairman, was close to tears as he said it was an atmosphere to beat any Muratti he had played in.

‘I don’t think that since the Island Games we’ve had an atmosphere like this at a football match and certainly not down here in any Muratti I have seen or played in,’ said a hard-working official who can look forward to being part of the Guernsey squad representing England against opposition from Turkey, Wales and Croatia at the Uefa Regions Cup preliminary round in Croatia at the end of September.
