Four sergeants in 10 years ‘not good for continuity’

Boyd KellyALDERNEY politician Boyd Kelly has urged Guernsey Police to reinstate the island’s suspended sergeant.

Mr Kelly, the States member responsible for policing, says he would like to see Sgt James Priest return to work for the sake of continuity.

Since 2000, four men have led Alderney Police: Rikk Butler, Steve Ayers, Jeff Hill and Sgt Priest. Both Mr Butler and Mr Ayers left the force inside two years after originally agreeing five-year contracts.

‘I think it’s terribly disappointing that we’ve had another interruption in the leadership of the policing of the island,’ said Mr Kelly (pictured).

‘We’ve had four sergeants now in 10 years. Clearly I can’t comment about the allegations, whatever they are, and whether they’re true or false – that’s a matter for Guernsey Police to investigate and come to their own conclusions. It’s just the interruption – it’s a shame it has taken place.’
