90 more Health staff

Wednesday 5th May 2010, 2:30PM BST.

Charles Parkinson & Princess Elizabeth HospitalAN EXTRA 90 staff were hired by Health and Social Services last year at a time when it was being urged to cut spending, Guernsey’s ‘Chancellor’ said yesterday.

The department took on the full-time equivalent staff throughout 2009 and Treasury minister Charles Parkinson is trying to find out why, although Health disputes this figure as ‘misleading’.

HSSD used £2.5m. in unspent capital allocations to balance its books last year as the department spent more than £107m. in total.

Deputy Parkinson (pictured) said he had serious concerns about HSSD’s spending – which was increasing ‘dramatically’ – and the department needed to get the issue under control.

The capital allocation money used was supposed to be for purchasing essential equipment and Deputy Parkinson confirmed departments will not be able to resort to this tactic in the future to stay within budget. Treasury will address the loophole during this year’s Budget in December.

Another vote of no confidence in the offing ?

Hunter Adam obviously doesn’t spend the cash himself but he seems to have no control over his management team

    What to do eh!
I would like to see other members, especially the senior ones, offering to help here rather than being so hard.
For me HA is the right man in the right job, but it cant be easy to control that budget.
Would it no be better to help him, after all, do we really want to lose another good one?

is that not going to be because of the new clinical block? Nothing has closed down to my knowledge- so surely more staff are needed?

The new clinical block is filled with wards and departments that used to be housed elsewhere so no new services and therefore no new staff? I think the brand new heart ward has not been opened and patients are at the moment sharing beds with the intensive care unit. The ward is there though when they can afford to open it. Some of the wards i think have had beds closed as they didn’t have enough nurses and sent back agency nurses to save money.

There have been cooks job go as the night cafe has closed for staff. This should mean less staff not more!

If there are 90 more staff then surely it should be easy enough to know where they are working? The turnover of staff is high though so perhaps it was a blurring of those leaving and those taking their place? There are also a lot of unfilled vacancies i think.
