Delhi team is biggest yet

GUERNSEY will have its biggest team at a Commonwealth Games when it touches down in Delhi this October.
The 45-strong team surpasses the 42 in Melbourne in 2006 and they include tennis starlet Heather Watson, track and field stars Dale Garland and Lee Merrien, and bowler Alison Merrien.
Sprint hurdler Glenn Etherington misses out on the grounds of eligibility and there are still concerns whether bowler Lucy Beere and badminton player Gayle Lloyd will be cleared to travel by the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Peter Sirett (picture), chairman of the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association, hopes that both women will get the nod to go.
‘There are question marks over the eligibility of two athletes [Beere and Lloyd] who have met the sporting criteria but have not resided in Guernsey for the requisite five years.’

Why in the first place were these two athletes names put forward by their Sports Association to the Validation committee when clearly they knew that have not been residents in the Island for the qualifying period, unfortunately these two athletes have not met one of the criteria’s but Mr Sirett hopes that both will get the nod to go, then what is he going to do about the ones that haven’t met the sports criteria but have been born and bred in Guernsey!
This could lead the Guernsey Commonwealth Association in a sticky position, between Residents and the Sports criteria.

Iceman – there is no way that anyone who does not meet the sporting criteria would be allowed to compete, and there is no reason why they should.

Hi TL reading your comment on my comment! Where does it say that they should compete, I was only asking why these athletes were put forward obviously you didn’t read it properly! Now you’re saying there is no way they should compete which is fair enough so it seems to me that you are happy for people who haven’t got residential qualifications to represent Guernsey at the Commonwealths, you’re not one of the ones who are trying to get in the back door by any chance!
PS. Do you actually know the criteria for the individual sports? Because if you did know you might have a different view of some people who have just missed out on their own sports criteria.

If the island is shipping in talented sportspeople (not purposely however), and is happily trying to get them included, then its a bit of a kick in the teeth to the Guernseyfolk who may be right on the cusp of qualification criteria.
Its very demotivational for them, some might say it would make them try harder, but I dont think this is the case.
