BOBBY EGGO came within one shot of his trademark scratch/handicap doubles in the first of the island’s individual ‘majors’ of the season on Saturday.
The former Walker Cup star fell just short of achieving the Butterfield Salver/Brymay Cup double, only one strip of a young lad standing in his way, junior James Hamon.
This year’s Star Trophy goalkeeper and son of former Muratti star Chris, lifted the Brymay Cup by a shot from Eggo and fellow island player Steve Mahy on the back of a remarkable morning net 63, two-under 68 gross.
Not bad for a 14-year-old.
Eggo was a comfortable winner of the Butterfield Salver off scratch, posting an untouchable five-under 135 to win by four from Mahy, who was also a model of consistency, shooting gross rounds of 69 and 70.
