20,000 – the number who went to Lib Day party

Tuesday 11th May 2010, 2:30PM BST.

crowds in TownAN ESTIMATED 20,000 people went to Town for the 65th anniversary of the Liberation – about a third of the island’s population.

But it will not be the last big 9 May celebration if Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara gets his way.

‘No, it isn’t. Why should it be?

‘Liberation Day’s really developed over the last four or five years into a really, really good community event. We will do a 70th and we’ll carry on doing them every five years. It’s all about community and it’s all about remembrance.’

Deputy O’Hara thought that this year’s turnout was double that of 2009.

‘It wouldn’t surprise me if there were 20,000 people in Town and it could even have been more.’
