Coach of the year shock for Vance

Tuesday 11th May 2010, 2:30PM BST.

Tony VanceTONY VANCE has confessed he was ‘very surprised’ to receive the coach of the year award just before Guernsey departed Jersey after Saturday’s Kleinwort Benson Muratti victory.

Guernsey Football Association chairman Mark Le Tissier made the presentation to the island boss in St Helier and Vance admitted that it capped a memorable season for him and his squad.

‘I have had quite a good week or so,’ said Vance (pictured). ‘I think I might go and buy a lottery ticket now, just in case.’

The 1-0 win over Jersey at Springfield, thanks to Ross Allen’s penalty, came seven days after the Sarnians won the FA Carlsberg National League System Cup with a 5-2 victory against the Liverpool County Premier League at the Track.

But Vance emphasised that the preparations for all the success began the best part of 12 months ago.

I’m not close enough to know what preparation the coach did with this group of players, but I suspect it would be no different to any other year.

I don’t think it is fair to say the coach should be given the chop for having a weak year group or the players not performing on the day.

Anyway – who would you replace him with? He is one of the most qualified coaches in Guernsey.

i think you make the point in your first comment g.t. it seems a fresh face might do things differently, and it is your job to ensure the players perform on the day, and paper qualifications dont make a good coach.

You have an amazing knack of bleeting at the same time as saying nothing.

I meant that most coaches at this level will prepare a team in much the same way. I don’t think he’s been the manager of this team for very long, so I don’t think your “freshen things up” point is valid. Plus players change each year in age group football – so things are “fresh”.

A coach can only do so much and once the players are on the pitch it’s down to them.

I honestly doubt that many of the players would be happy with their performances (as an individual or as a team) and would be looking to heap all of the blame on the coach.

Paper qualifications will give you the skills and knowledge required to coach effectively, however I do agree that there will be some people who could coach without their qualifications.

If the GFA appointed a coach without any qualifications instead of someone with, I don’t think they would be doing their job properly.

Your argument is not a good one and you sound like a bitter player / player’s mum.

Qualifications or none, that is the question.

There is arguments for both sides.

I’ve said before on other forums that you could not find a better coach than Colin Renouf. He does not have a qualification to his name but what a coach! Knowledge, experience & superb man-managment. He is the kind coach/manager that you want to play for and give 100%.

The current under-18 coach has qualifications in abundance, which is more in line with what the GFA want to do and has a lot to do with the future of local football. I also think there is a personality clash in there somewhere aswell which has not helped. If you do have the repect of everyone of your squad then it unbalance things. This is not just speculation as i have spoken to at 3 or 4 players who do rate the current under-18 coach.
If you don’t have any belief in your coach then it transfers to your performance on the field.

Our under 18 structure for local football is a bit slap dash ever since they got rid of the old Youth One League. Players have been lost because of the age gaps after finishing under-16 football and our progress at this level has not risen.

Coaching is not just about how many badges you have or how many courses you’ve attended. It’s about connecting with the group of players you have been charged with. Building a repoire but still commanding repect. It can be a very fine line but when everything goes right it is the best feeling in the world for a coach, not just the players.

There seems little point in striking up a debate with someone so willing to walk away from it.
I suspect I would agree with you about the current system v. the previous one but hey, I guess we will never know!
If this is your gripe then why keep complaining about the u18 performance and coach? Do you think his coaching bad or his selections? Again I guess we will never know!
