TRAFFIC cones and bottles were hurled at Guernsey football fans as they were escorted to the ferry home by Jersey Police after the Muratti victory, it has emerged.

Sarnian supporters yesterday said the attack by Jersey fans which started during a pitch invasion did not stop after the game and described the abuse as very intimidating.

Tom Creed, an assistant trust administrator at Louvre Group, was caught up in the trouble. ‘When the final whistle went and all the Guernsey fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the players, Jersey came on from the other side and it all kicked off. The Jersey fans began throwing bottles and stuff towards us and our players as well,’ he said.

Police broke that up quickly but it was not the end of it, said the 19-year-old.

‘After that, we were walked to the harbour with one police van in front of us and two behind and the Jersey fans still followed us all the way down. It was quite bad – I have seen trouble when playing before but that was probably the worst I have ever seen.’

I find it strange that hooliganism can only be attributed to football. Why?

Football isn’t the only sport to have problems. It was only a few weeks back that members of our island rugby team were in trouble.

An the individuals involved in the throwing objects are far from football fans i’m guessing. Just thugs.

I was at Springfield for this years final as part of the ‘Barmy Army’ and from what I saw, it wasnt really football fans that caused any of the trouble. When the final whistle went we all ran to celebrate with our players in the middle of the pitch like we have done every year we have won it since I can remember. As I approached our players,a wall of around 300 Jersey Youngsters ran on from the far corner throwing flag sticks, bottles and a number of other things, there were not enough Police present and things were ugly for around 10 minutes until they got it under control. I didnt see many Jersey Red shirts or scarfs but all the Guernsey fans were in Green which shows it wernt football fans causing the trouble,a policeman later told me that a load of people had entered the ground from the estates behind Springfield 15 mins before the end of the game.
All the Guernsey fans were then led out of the ground and escorted to the harbour by police, all of us singing celebratory songs but with no anger what so ever.As we got to the harbour approach,we were stopped by Police due to a load of teenagers up the road, then as we were on opur way again we were bombarded with Traffic cones, and orenge road lights, the Police kept ther line and got us to the harbour, luckily with no injury.
After the England Portugal riots in Jersey a few years ago I feel the Jersey authorities do have a football thug mentality that needs looking at in there island.
Lets hope they catch and name the culprits before they are allowed to travel to Guernsey for next years game.

The one thing you can always guarantee when there is trouble at a football match is that it is always someone else’s fault.
