OUR’s postal consultation goes ahead

Thursday 13th May 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Dave JonesTHE regulator’s decision to go out to consultation on its plans to change postal law to allow competition has been described as unacceptable by a leading opponent.

Deputy Dave Jones (pictured) wrote to the Office of Utility Regulation last week urging it to calm regulatory activities until after Commerce and Employment had finalised its review of the current system.

He was surprised the OUR was pressing ahead with its plan to open up the postal market.

‘The States has not even decided if it wants competition in the postal market,’ he said. ‘I think the OUR is once again forcing the situation and I find that unacceptable.

‘We have a review going on and that should be allowed to take place. Once that has been finished and scrutinised it would then be the time for the States to take a view about whether it wants competition.’

Although I wish the OUR didn’t even exist in the island I can see the logic of Mr Curran preparing for a favourable outcome to Carla McNutty’s investigations. If it happens to go his way then he will be ready to take immediate action, thus justifying his ever increasing staff numbers

The States on the other hand have a habit of taking one ever so gentle step at a time, usually beginning with a report by some expensive consultant, then having a full day’s debate on the results of that first step before venturing on to step two , three and four, which leads to hugely frustrating and costly delays

One of the best examples is the time the Market building took to finish. Private enterprise started demolishing the old Savoy Hotel complex a couple of years after the market was started and had tenants in the finished office block at least a year before the first new market shop opened

We can’t wait for Dave to muster his opposition, many local companies will be out of business by then, losing money and jobs whilst the GPO fiddles. Interesting political stance to say sod the (tax paying) private sector, lets protect post jobs and legacy monopolies!
Maybe the GP should interview a few post customers who are bearing the brunt of these massive price hikes in order to protect an inefficient and wasteful management who already admit that their business model has no sustainable future….looks like Jersey are in the same boat on this
http://www.thisisjersey.com/2010/05/15/postal-price-hike-is-ridiculous/ competition for commercial postal services cannot come soon enough.
