Flybe will fly first through double ash limit

FLYBE will be the first airline in the UK to be allowed to fly within the new approved safe levels for volcanic ash.
The latest regulations, which have been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority, will significantly reduce the number of flights cancelled.
Aurigny is now seeking permission to fly within the new levels.
The development was confirmed on Monday night after the CAA had asked airlines to work with aircraft and engine manufacturers and the Met Office to improve ash tolerance levels without compromising safety.
The new limit would have meant only 21 flights would have been cancelled on Sunday and Monday compared to the 380 that were under the old regulations.

Are the pilots as confident as the airline owners that it is safe to fly in these conditions?
I do know something about this. My late father was a pilot. He passed away peacefully in his sleep (not screaming in terror like his passengers).

why are you getting so worked up on your own assumption that they might charge more???
There the first airline that will be flying and there’s nothing about them charging more for it! Especially when most people have probably already paid for their flights!
Get off the aurigny band-wagon and at least wait to see if Flybe DO charge more before you start your moaning!

What a complete joke they are for being the first airline to gain approval on the back of what must have been many hours and late nights conversing with the engine manufacturers and airframe manufacturers to get all the necessary data in place to satisfy themselves and the CAA?!
Whilst Flybe do get some things wrong, I’m amazed that someone has still managed to criticise them for their recent actions in gaining regulatory approval to operate in higher concentrations of ash.
And in response to Betty Swollocks, yes we are (I don’t work for Flybe). But when we get the nod I’ll be happy to go. Far cleverer brains than I have done the calculations here, in particular the engine manufacturers. If they trust their engines then so do I. This isn’t blind following by the way, they do make available official documents with facts and figures of testing.

Flight safety is paramount,Flybe is not going fly in unsafe conditions.The household vacuum cleaner is much like a turbine or Jet Engine,our Henry is still able to suck up Cat fluff,after years of abuse.

Fly be. What exactly has jet engines got
to do with Q8′s which are only opperating
2 islands. I prefer 2 travel on Condor Ferries
least I can take my new Aston martin with me
give it a blast up the M5.

Nathan – no they don’t.
John Cockroft – lets hope you have a better understanding of the mechanics of your Aston than you do aircraft engines.
The engines on the Q400′s are turbines – exactly the same as a “jet” engine. The turbines drive propellers and not fans as in a “jet”.
And Nathan the engines on the FlyBe planes are made by the same company as those on Aurigny’s ATR’s before you add another intelligent comment…

What a negative lot of little islanders you all are. FlyBe are at least trying to do something positive. As to flying skills however, FlyBe, Aurigny, and especially Blue Islands, could all learn lots from the best pilots in the world. They happen to work for British International Helicopters and the Isles of Scilly Skybus. These are the guys in whose hands I want to be if my feet are not firmly on terra firma.

Captain tim/Nathan/John Cockroft – I liked your idea of changing your name to 3 different things so people would think there’s other people agreeing with you but I’m afraid your plan has a flaw – Your symbol stays the same which means they all came from the same computer…woops!
Just stick to your ‘one’ name next time – if other people want to agree with you I’m sure they will.

Really? Well I’m a “true Guernsey person” as in my father is local and I was born here. I back the airline that meets my particular needs at the best value, sometimes that’s Flybe, sometimes that’s Aurigny. Ah, hold on, my mother’s English…so my support of Flybe at times must be due to my mongrel blood.
Perhaps Nathan’s “true Guern” test should replace ancestry and place of birth as the new benchmark for Guernsey citizenship

Oh Nathan, please explain the different princibles between Turbo Prop and Turbo Fan engines.
I must have been missinformed by my instructors when we did that part of the engineering course.

Just remember all of you “pro” FlyBE folk they are not doing it for you, me or any other members of the traveling public, they are doing it for FlyBE!!! – More flights means more money end of story. You can rest assured that if it didn’t mean more money but did mean more convenience to passengers FlyBE would not have the the slightest interest in this.
After the first volcano nonsense my Aurigny refund arrived in a week, my Virgin refund arrived in two weeks and yes, my FlyBE refund took the best part of a month!

Lets not forget here you pro Aurigny guys but you have already paid Aurigny plenty of cash before you even purchase your ticket. Remember buying it it a number of years ago? we all did, so we pay even if we dont fly!!!! It is a loss making airline and will continue to be asking for cash from Guernsey folk for many years to come…I dont have anything against Aurigny but lets have some perspective here…….flybe has just turned a profit in one of the worst trading conditions in recent history with not one penny injected by the states…

Let us hope, as members of the travelling public that this decision has been made on sound scientific and engineering data and not brought about by commercial pressure.
Airlines have lost billions over the last month or so and there is little profit, if any to be made from the industry. If they cant fly it will another nail in the coffin for some operators.
Perhaps Flybe could reassure the travelling public by explaining to us what measures were taken to secure their agreement with aircraft/engine manufacturers to double the level of ash in which they can fly.
As I understand it, before volcanic ash became a problem over Europe, the advice published for pilots was “Avoid Avoid Avoid.”
