Minister ready to act to save outdoor events

Mike O'HaraBUREAUCRACY should not stop special events happening in Guernsey, according to the Culture and Leisure minister.

Deputy Mike O’Hara (pictured) was commenting after news that the Cobo Bay Hotel’s balcony gigs could be scaled back or stopped altogether because of red tape.

‘It’s a venue that is liked by lots of people and it’s historic; it would be a shame if the venue were lost. We would not want special events to be stopped because of bureaucracy. We would not be happy if similar things like street parties were being stopped,’ he said.

The police have the power to close roads for a special event but the definition of which events qualify for a free permit has been narrowed, meaning the balcony gigs no longer meet the criteria.
