Apartment Bar to close

Saturday 22nd May 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Brian Richards THE Apartment Bar is closing its doors for the final time next weekend.

The business, run by Elvis impersonator Brian Richards and his wife Sue, is the only dedicated karaoke bar in the island.

Mr Richards (pictured) said it had been a difficult decision, but mounting debts had made it impossible to go on.

‘We found out that for five years our accountants had not been doing our taxes, despite the fact we were paying them,’ he said. ‘The tax office has now said we need to pay them £17,000 to cover it and we can’t afford it. We are paying everything we can, but at the moment we have no money.’

Mr Richard also said that business had been poor. ‘Some nights we are not making any money at all,’ he said.

What a shame, end of an era. I worked there as a chef in the early eighties and it was packed day and night. How times have changed. Good luck or the future.

So sad to learn one of my favorite places on earth is closing. I spent nearly every evening of my 2 year stay on Guernsey there and have some of the most wonderful memories from the era when Glyn Reynold, Mr. Bean of Karaoke and many other friends were around. Best wishes for anything future brings your way Brian.
