Drama from start to finish

Saturday 22nd May 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Weymouth resident, Steve Matthews (No. 29) first raced at Vazon in 1977. He will be 72 years old in a few months and told his wife that he wanted to give his bike one more outing. He had not ridden it for three years until last weekend when, unfortunately, a flat battery stopped his fun. Bike No. 8 is being raced by Dave Cleal. (Picture by Andrew Le Poidevin, 0973629)

THE third sand racing meeting of this season had action and drama from start to finish and even before official racing had even begun.

The ambulance was called down on to the beach when the grass track car of Simon Carre was hit in the side by Vienna Le Cheminant, who he had just passed during practice, resulting in a very painful right arm for the former and dented bodywork and protection bars on his car.

The second race of the afternoon, the first for the juniors, had to be stopped twice, firstly when Billy-Reece Rive stalled on the line and then, secondly, when, on the next attempt, the elastic start cord got wrapped around his front wheel causing him to come to a sudden stop.

On the third start the remaining four riders did get away but Rive was in the pits having the cord removed from his wheel and receiving a warning from his father not to start on the inside again.
