In the Geoffrey Edwards Memorial handicap the Bougourd-trained Garden Party appeared to be the most unnerved runner as a result of some pre-race antics by a rival, unshipping jockey Rob Kirk as the field lined up on the first occasion.
However, once the race started in earnest, Kirk was always handy and as the field passed the furlong marker he produced his mount between Noble Dictator and Anfield Road to get up on the line to get the better of the former by a nose from Noble Dictator (the narrowest of margins) with the latter just three-quarters of a length away in third.
Those who had the wisdom to back the winner on the Race Club’s tote system were handsomely rewarded with odds of three points higher than those of the bookmakers, although the tote forecast paid nearly two thirds less than the win dividend.
