‘POSITIVE’ talks have been held about bringing the ice rink back to Market Square at Christmas.

Everything Ice Ltd, the company which built and ran the rink, Terrace Promotions and rink sponsor Sure are hopeful that an agreement will be reached shortly.

‘Because of the success of the event last year, we are very keen to secure its return,’ said Paul Taylor, Sure’s marketing director for the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Bermuda.

‘There are a lot of people involved in the planning process and we are currently engaged in positive discussions with all relevant parties.’

Nice idea but the area is too small.

Market Square is a nice place to have it but it was a little small. I remember when it was at the Model Yacht Pond, that was a perfect size! Though a small ice rink is better than none at all. It’s good that there’s more to do in the winter months.

wouldnt it be more cost effective to build one permanently maybe at beau?? It would great for Guernsey folk and visters. Be nicer then getting on the ice with half of Guernsey because its only up for a short time. Just a idea

Why not have a synthetic ice rink instead? It looks and feels like real ice (except for the temperature). They can be used in all seasons, costs less than real ice, can be built to any size and is easier to manage and maintain.

Here is an example that i just got from a google websearch:

I think you are missing the point. The reason that this was so successful is because it is NOT there all of the time and was in the centre of town.

This was not about providing a permanent ice skating venue, or providing enough space for people to practice their triple axles, this was about providing something to encourage people to come together and get in the festive spirit. On that level, it worked perfectly.

If we had a permanent venue in an out of town location, no-one would get so excited about it.

100% agree with you TL – the attraction is in the novelty factor.

Build a permanent ice rink here and it will eventually end up like the Bowl….really popular to begin with, but now overpriced and (whenever I visit on a Saturday) generally half empty; propped up by few die hard regulars and corporate events.
