Cobo climbdown
Thursday 27th May 2010, 2:30PM BST.
A U-TURN by the authorities means that the road in front of Cobo Bay Hotel will be closed for a balcony gig this bank holiday Monday after all.
And police have told hotelier David Nussbaumer that he will be allowed to reapply to them to close the road for the next two concerts this summer, rather than having to put in an application for an expensive alfresco licence.
‘I think the power of the people has made the authorities think again and come to their senses. The issue was with the advice from the Law Officers,’ he said.
The Law Officers ruled that the terms ‘special event’ and ‘special occasion’ are not defined in any legislation and so are open to interpretation by the police.
The climbdown follows a meeting between police and officials from the Environment Department on Tuesday.

I won’t be going to any of the gigs but I’m delighted that common sense has prevailed here.
We live on a small island with finite space, let’s not take it for granted. If we want a good community atmosphere here, we all need to learn to give and take – even if it means the horror of a little inconvenience for 3 days a year.
I used to live near Saumarez Park and the noise from events there could be irritating at times, but it wasn’t a big deal in comparison to living near to such a beautiful open space.

Steve-O – I heard that U2 were pencilled in until Bono’s unfortunate injury.

Paul
I know what you are getting at, we shouldnt be expecting Biffy Clyo to be playing on Cobo balcony, but even so, for such a high profile gig, there are much better options available locally.
