‘Monsoon’ a godsend for drought-hit farmers

FARMERS are breathing a sigh of relief after yesterday’s heavy rain.
Before the downpour there had been no substantial rain for nearly two months, meaning grass on which they feed cattle was failing to grow or dying.
Farmers had been looking at emergency measures such as buying in feed from the UK or culling some of the less-productive dairy animals.
Some were also considering approaching the States for help. But Guernsey Farmers’ Association chairman James Watts said yesterday’s rain would give grass and crops a much-needed boost.
