Friday 28th May 2010, 2:29PM BST.

George Le PageTHE chief officer of police has denied that the force did a U-turn on its decision over closing the road for Cobo Bay Hotel balcony gigs.

George Le Page (pictured) said the decision to shut the road for Bank Holiday Monday’s event was made by the Environment Department and that the new definition of what could be considered a special event and merit a road closure still stood.

An agreement was reached, after a meeting on Tuesday, that the police would do the coordinating but it would be Environment closing the road.

‘The police felt that it was not appropriate for them to take the decision. It was taken by the Environment Department, who considered all the issues and decided to close the road. But we, the police, have not climbed down,’ said the chief officer.
