A moving story

A TV crew from S4C filmed Welsh residents and staff for the shows Wedi 3 and Wedi 7. (0974730)
A TV crew from S4C was in Herm last week to interview our Welsh residents and staff for the shows Wedi 3 and Wedi 7, which were screened earlier this week.
White House Hotel manager Sion Dobson Jones last year met some hotel guests who were interested in the move he and his family had made to the island from Portmeirion in North Wales. One of the guests knew a producer at S4C and thought it would make an interesting story.
Sion, along with wife Lucy, and children Catrin, 6, and Ffion, 3, were followed by the cameras as they went about their normal routine for around three days.
They also filmed other staff, and various scenic spots and flowers around the island.
Wedi 3 is a daily lifestyle show, screened on S4C at three each day and followed in the evening by sister programme Wedi 7.
Eagle-eyed Guerns may have spotted Herm’s newest sculptures, which arrived last week.

The Spirit of Water sculpture graces the edge of the Woodland Walk pond. (0974731)
Three pieces by Ev Meynell are now displayed at various points in the island.
The largest, made of stainless steel and marble resin, is named In Flight. It stands 5ft tall and is in place on the triangle of grass near the harbour.
Halfway along the new Bluebell Walk is Olivia, a female figure made of resin bronze. She stands beside the natural grass seat in the woods.
In the valley of the Woodland Walk, another female figure, Spirit of Water, also resin bronze, graces the edge of the pond.
A little more of the island has now been opened up to guests. Visitors may have noticed that several months ago a row of wooden steps appeared near the end of the Spine Road nearest the common. For quite a while, these enigmatic steps didn’t lead anywhere. Now they are part of the new walk across the fields leading up to Monku Viewpoint. It’s quite a climb on sloping ground to the top of Monku, but at the end of it the reward is glorious views over the entire island in every direction.

These sculptures defile everything that is natural and beautiful in this tranquil island.
I was horrified to be greeted by ‘In Flight’ upon my arrival in Herm.At first I presumed it to be the logo of the Starboard Settlement, that being the only obvious reason for it being there.
The woodland walkway is further marred by 2 water feature type statues, the like of which you can pick up in any garden centre.
Whatever would the Major have said!

Calm down Kate! Personally, I think that they are beautiful and that it adds something to the attraction of Herm that such great pieces can be enjoyed by its visitors. How can a sculpture “defile” the natural environment anyway? You want to consult a dictionary before making such comments darling. Let’s see if Submarine will do a poll on the attractiveness of such sculptures?

Another example shown of the subjectivity of art. Kate hates them, Belinda loves them. Personally I side with Kate but that’s because that type of art doesn’t appeal to my particular taste.
The conclusion? I would say the artist has achieved one of the primary objectives of art – to stir the emotions!
