A GROUP of Guernsey’s top athletes have been preparing for this year’s Commonwealth Games with a week of warm-weather training in Portugal.

Six members of the Delhi 2010 team took part in the training camp in Monte Gardo on the Portuguese south coast where they experienced temperatures as high as 29C.

Although lower in humidity than the Indian city will be, conditions were fairly similar, and, as Dale Garland explained, it was as good as could have been hoped for.

‘The main thing when you are doing a training camp is that you don’t want to be travelling across time zones, because it takes time to recover from the jet lag. It is the same place where team GB will prepare for this year’s Europeans, as well as before the London 2012 Olympics.’
