Younger wives will hit OAPs’ pockets
Tuesday 8th June 2010, 2:29PM BST.
THE Social Security minister is reminding islanders to be prepared for changes to the benefits system.
Deputy Mark Dorey (pictured) said old age pensions and widow’s benefits would be affected by the States’ 2003 decision to individualise pension entitlements and make rules gender neutral.
The changes mean that married men turning 65 after 1 January 2014 will receive just their own single old age pension.
There will be no pension for their wives until they also turn 65.
‘There was a need to remove discriminatory provisions within the scheme, which were mostly working in favour of married women,’ said Deputy Dorey.
