Leale’s Yard is too big – Co-op’s rival
Wednesday 9th June 2010, 11:30AM BST.

Co-op chief executive Jim Hopley has warned that unless the Leale’s Yard development is big enough, it will not attract the right sort of shops. (Picture by Adrian Miller, 0982402)
SANDPIPER believes the Co-op’s plans for Leale’s Yard are too grand.
But chief executive Tony O’Neill has also taken issue with the expert’s report which wants a block on all retail development outside St Peter Port.
He called for those who were fighting for and against out-of-town retail development to come together.
‘We have the St Peter Port protectionists and the out-of-town developers and I am saying we must get a blend of the two in order to protect the jewel in the crown that is St Peter Port, and allow complementary development elsewhere.’
‘The Leale’s Yard that is planned is of too great a scale to complement St Peter Port and what we need more is sensitive out-of-town development that will complement Town, not damage it,’ he said.

What a surprise. Nothing to do with the fact that it will bring some much-needed retail competition to the island I suppose… Nothing like an unbiased opinion eh Sandpiper?!

What a hypocrite O’Neill is!
He’s got his big store at his own MURA at the Bouet but he doesn’t want the Co-Op to have the same at their MURA on the Bridge!!!

So we in St Sampsons get all the rubbish.. Tips.. Power Station.. Gas Tanks.. Oil Tanks and most likely the Incinerator..
Just for once cant we have somewhere nice to shop ? rather than town which is full of Banks, Coffee shops.. and the ever growing number of empty shops..
Now almost our local owned shops have now gone St David’s, Gabriel’s etc, Lets get Debenhams, BHS, Argos, Tesco or ASDA over here, maybe even an IKEA.. so we can benefit from the much cheaper and better choice of shopping that the UK enjoy..

I just hope whatever they put on whatever site is better than the current Co-Op in St Sampsons. We visited it recently and was shocked at the poor service, bad produce, over priced goods and general lack of oomph. It was like walking into any small convenient store on a sink estate in the uk as far as we were concerned. Don’t get me started on the staff; I challenged one woman who was demonstrating an item (which normally uses three ingredients to make if you are a general cook) as to why anyone would waste their time and money on a homogenised over processed product with over 20 ingredients. I was told that she didn’t know what the item she was demonstrating contained – I suggested she check the ingredient list on the back of the pack. That aside, she did say that that is what the “locals” wanted. What? locals really want that sort of crap? Or maybe they think down in St Sampsons they do eh?
Compare that to St Martins Co-Op. This store is more professionally run, and even the non-locals who work their have a good use of the English language.
I am not getting at the Co-Op in general – if it were a Marks and Sparks i would complain just the same.
You just cannot get over the fact that the Bridge looks like a UK seaside town out of season; the charity shops whilst a fabulous idea just cheapen the place and it might as well be renamed DHSS Ville – cos to me, that’s what it looks like. I hope that the revitalisation of the Bridge comes to light soon.

Oh, for heavens sake, please get on with this project. It is long overdue for investment and a viable working solution.
It is esentially waste land and Checkers are simply envious of the ownership by the Co-Op.

Sarkdog.
Checkers are probably the only ones who will be able to afford to rent a space there once finished.
