OBESITY continues to be a major health threat to islanders.

Some 60% of men and 48% of women in the island are considered overweight or obese, according to latest figures available to the Health and Social Services Department.

‘Obesity is clearly an issue we will have to take seriously in the next few years,’ said director of public health Dr Stephen Bridgman.

The 2008 Guernsey Healthy Lifestyle Survey, published today, asked people about their general health, smoking, alcohol use, weight and diet, exercise, stress, sunbathing and pregnancy.

More than half of nearly 750 respondents were overweight or obese.
