ONE deputy swapped the States for the stage – all in the name of comedy.

John Gollop was one of four who had their ‘15 minutes of fame’ during the open mic night at Les Rocquettes Hotel as part of the Festival of Comedy 2010.

He said former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik had been his inspiration for taking to the stage.

‘When he lost his seat he said he wanted a new career in stand-up after appearing on Have I Got News For You,’ said Deputy Gollop.

‘People don’t laugh at politics much, but it’s not unusual for people to laugh at me.’
