GUERNSEY was gripped by football fever on Saturday as England kicked off its South Africa 2010 World Cup campaign.

Hundreds of islanders donned kit, waved flags and packed venues to get into the spirit of the game – and despite the unsatisfactory 1-1 result spirits remained high throughout the night.

Car showrooms sported giant screens and tables while gardens were filled with barbecues and outdoor television sets in anticipation of the clash with the USA.
