HAIR salon owner Maggie Bichard, pictured, has praised a neighbour who raised the alarm after fire broke out on Sunday night.

At around 10pm, Paul Machon had just finished watching football at his home next door to Raffles Hair Salon, Grande Rue, St Saviours.

‘I was lying on the sofa getting rid of a birthday hangover when the power cut out,’ he said.

When Mr Machon went to check, he heard fire alarms going off inside the salon.

‘I broke the back door down and could see lots of smoke,’ he said.

‘I would have tackled it myself but it looked too big for me to handle – it cleared my hangover pretty quickly.’

Firefighters were called at 10.22pm and found smoke pouring out of the electrical cupboard where the fire had started.
