A GUERNSEY-BORN lawyer has been named the criminal defence lawyer of the year at the 2010 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards.

Former Grammar School student Peter Mahy, who now works for Howells Solicitors in Sheffield, won the accolade for winning a landmark case at the European Court of Human Rights, which established that the UK Government retaining the DNA of innocent people was unlawful.

The case, S and Marper v. UK, was lost at every level in the domestic courts before succeeding in the European one.

Mr Mahy said it was an honour to win the award for his efforts.
