Hospice demolition is started

Tuesday 15th June 2010, 1:00PM BST.

DEMOLITION of Les Bourgs Hospice started yesterday.

The Bailiff, Sir Geoffrey Rowland, who is patron of the fund-raising project to pay for the replacement development on the St Andrew’s site, was at the controls of the digger which started the process, after being shown what to do by its owner, Roger Froome.

The digger’s claw was soon smashing its way through the roof of the 1800s building, followed closely by the windows and walls.

Director of nursing Jo Boyd looked on with mixed emotions.

‘It’s a mixture of sadness seeing what is a very well thought of building being demolished, but it’s also with excitement about what will come next.

‘I know staff at the hospice will be sad to see it go,’ she said.

From the photo above, it looks like the States are setting a good example by recycling what they can before filling in yet more landfill…. Oh wait, no it doesn’t.

I do think it a huge shame when such buildings are demolished, as there are lots of islanders who would welcome the opportunity to be able to reuse parts of the building!
