THE jury is still out on Lucy Beere and Gayle Lloyd’s participation at the Delhi Commonwealth Games this autumn, but they have ruled on a third prospective competitor planning to go to India.

Track star Nathan Stevens won’t be on the plane.

Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association chairman Peter Sirett confirmed as much yesterday, the morning after athletics representation had attempted to persuade the GCGA to take the 400m runner and member of the island’s 4 x 400m relay squad.

‘He has made the decision himself because he simply doesn’t qualify under ours or the CGF [Commonwealth Games Federation] rules,’ said Sirett.

Nathan did not make the decision himself. This is a deliberately misleading statement by Peter Sirett if it has been correctly reported. He knows very well that a representative of the Commonwealth Games Federation told the Guernsey committee to submit Nathan’s application for THEIR decision. This was included clearly on the Guernsey Athletic Association’s submission to them as stated in the article above, and which I read. The committee thought they knew better as usual. They clearly have their own petty agendas and not the best interest of Guernsey’s athletes at heart. It may well have been that Nathan no longer qualified due to internal housing regulations, but Nathan deserved the chance for it to be decided by the PROPER authority. He has been loyal throughout his entire career, and has often run whilst injured in order to help the team. My thanks to the members of the athletic association for supporting him.
