Vote change is sought
Monday 21st June 2010, 1:00PM BST.
ISLANDERS’ votes could reflect their wishes better if a new system of voting was introduced, according to Deputy Mike Hadley.
He has placed an amendment to the States Assembly and Constitutional Committee’s report on voting. Deputy Hadley (pictured) believes that a single transferable voting system would be better.
That would mean that islanders would mark who was their favourite candidate and then show their second, third and fourth choices and so on.
Then as candidates were elected or eliminated, the votes would be transferred to the voter’s next preferred candidate.
‘One of the problems with a multi-member constituency is that people sometimes don’t understand the consequences of how they vote,’ he said.
