TIDAL power in Guernsey will not produce as much energy as once thought, it was revealed yesterday.

Guernsey Renewable Energy Commission chairman Richard Babbe and member Jeremy Thompson outlined the progress made over the past 18 months.

The commission was set up by Commerce and Employment last year to promote and explore renewable energy sources in the island.

Mr Babbe, a lawyer, told the Chamber of Commerce June lunch, that Guernsey had excellent resources, but he wanted to outline the reality of having a tidal power system.

‘I don’t want to belittle it, but it’s not going to be as big as we thought and it can’t be used at the moment,’ he said.

Add on solar power, wind turbines, double summer time, energy saving and things should be really positive.

The truth about “renewable” energy, finally – it’s just not efficient! We can’t rely on it for all of our electricity generation requirements – but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t look to tidal/wave generators that have minimal impact on their immediate environment (if such things exist) to supplement nuclear/fossil fuel sources.

@cynic – I don’t think any realistic person expected us to can the power station immediately, it’s a gradual process. As time passes and the technology develops, renewable energy will become more efficient.

Add that to the fact that electrical goods are becoming more energy efficient and there is still hope that at some point all our electricity can be generated from renewable sources.
