‘Mr Angling’ wriggles off the GP hook

Wednesday 23rd June 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Len Le PageTHIS paper has never had a correspondent – of any sort – quite like Len Le Page, who wriggles off the hook today.

For a start, he has outlasted any other who has provided regular copy of any sort in living memory.

But Len (pictured), who pens his very final column today, is more than just a survivor.

In my book he is fishing’s biggest friend, biggest plus point, biggest voice and the sport will be poorer for his immediate retirement.

On Friday 25 January 1980 Peter Martin (real name Peter Witterick), Len’s predecessor in providing local anglers with a weekly focal point for fishy news, piped in his mate and newcomer with warm affection and 30-and-a-half-years later it is left to me to pipe him out with an equal dose of warmth and gratitude.

Len has been a star for his sport.
