Vote for your chief

Monday 28th June 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Jan KuttelwascherISLANDERS could get the chance to elect the next chief minister at the 2012 general election.

The option is one of two amendments that Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher has placed to the States Assembly and Constitution Committee’s proposals for island-wide voting which the Assembly will debate this week.

Deputy Kuttelwascher (pictured) said his amendments were principally ‘watered down’ versions of the main proposal which he was not convinced would get members’ support.

Both options would give the electorate the chance to vote for 11 deputies on an island-wide basis and 34 by district.

    Sorry Jan

Anything that prevents me from voting for up to 45 Deputies is not island wide voting

I wonder how many jurisdictions of 60,000 people need 45 representatives ?

The 60,000,000 good people of the UK would have
    45,000 MP’s on that scale

    Hello

I agree with Ray – 45 is a lot and why on earth does it need to be broken down into so many districts?

The trouble is that there are 45 individual ego’s to be massaged and 45 points of view. There seems to be an aversion to ‘political parties’ which I don’t understand. What would be wrong with a group of prospective Deputies standing in an island wide election with a set of clearly defined policy proposals on which they all agree and present to the public to support?

Instead the States limp from one self induced crisis to another whilst the rest of us look on in horror and foot the bill.

Ray – You are right. I will support full Island -Wide voting. My amendments are subordinate to the main propositions of SACC. They would only come in to play if all the SACC propositions fail. I would prefer some Deputies elected Island-Wide rather than none at all.

Hello & Ray – I also am seconding an amendment to reduce the number of Deputies to 35!

    Hello

Jan. 35 Deputies is a step in the right direction.

The population of the island is similar to a UK county town (Taunton is 63k) where there are not usually 45 councilors and I doubt many of them have had £12m to waste on waste.

The whole governance here in need of root and branch reform and whilst turkeys are reluctant to vote for Christmas I’m pleased some of you see that something needs to be done and pronto.
