Deadly White Rock air raid commemorated

BOXES of Guernsey tomatoes were symbolically laid out at the White Rock yesterday evening to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the bombing raid which signalled the start of the German Occupation.

Friends and relatives gathered at the site of the attack, which left 34 people dead.

Dean of Guernsey, the Very Rev. Canon Paul Mellor, led the service.

‘The bombing raid was one of the great tragedies of those dark days of the Second World War for the people of this Bailiwick. People were going about their lawful and peaceful business, unarmed civilians, and were suddenly attacked with great violence.’
