Environment will keep £400K from bus rise – for now

ENVIRONMENT will pocket the £400,000 it is aiming to raise through a bus fare increases – for now.
And the department’s chief officer, Steve Smith (pictured), did not anticipate islanders or visitors being put off using the service because of the proposal for a single fare to rise from 60p to £1.
‘At the moment the money will be ring-fenced, but my expectation is that in due course it will be returned to the centre and Environment, like every other department, can then bid for its use,’ said Mr Smith.
Tribal, advisors brought in by Treasury to conduct a value for money review, identified £3.623m. that could be saved in this area over five years, but what Environment has identified is much lower.

So this raise is in effect a tax? Wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s not even going back into the bus service.
