THE developer behind an application to demolish a building that was used to dress granite for the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral has said it was not aware of the history.

Local tour guide Sylvia Brouard had raised concerns about the plans to knock down the building because of its significance.

Riverside Point (Guernsey) Ltd representative Martin Bourgaize said that prior to reading an article in yesterday’s Guernsey Press, he had been unaware of the situation.

However, if it was successful he said the company would try to find a way to ensure the site was recognised, for instance with a plaque.

In a few years time, I think Guernsey might benefit from a similar commemorative plaque, perhaps it would read…

“this site was once Guernsey, a beautiful, unspoiled little island in the Channel, where the locals didn’t have much, but were happy, now home to greed, money and consumerism’
